SCUBA Training For Divers with Disabilities or “Adaptive” Needs

The adventure begins! Imagine scuba diving weightless underwater with other marine life.  This scuba adventure is waiting for you!  It's the most exciting feeling imaginable.   Learn to SCUBA dive with your family and friends and a team of highly qualified instructors/course director with over 10 years experience teaching people with adaptive needs.

"Scuba Diver" is the entry level scuba certification course taught by an active HSA or NIADD Instructor. It provides the fundamental knowledge and skills to scuba dive. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities within the limits of their certification and experieince

There are 54 Million people in the United States that possess some form of disability. This stunning statistic represents one quarter of our population.  Most of these people do not consider themselves disabled. They simply view themselves as ordinary human beings that happen to have a condition requiring them to work a little harder than most in order to accomplish the same objective. Many times, science has developed tools and devices that help an individual supplement or “adapt” to a specific need. While the use of devices such as hearing aids and eye glasses hardly seem disabling, these same devices are in fact adaptive. It isn’t until an individual requires the use of prosthetic device or a wheel chair that they become labeled as “disabled” or “handicapped”. Unfortunately, all too often those of us in the “mainstream” have a difficult time seeing ourselves in similar circumstances and therefore (out of ignorance) begin to place limitations on the “disabled”.

Fortunately, organizations exist that promote people with disabilities living a full and active (dare we say, adventurous) life.  People with disabilities are sailing, racing, mountain climbing, skiing and now SCUBA diving! Yes, even SCUBA diving is possible through proper education and training, public awareness, trained instructors, and the availability of facilities and transportation that comply with wheel chair accessibility and provisions for the hearing and visually impaired.  For millions of people, SCUBA diving is no longer a dream but a reality.

Until recently, there has been little opportunity for self-development available to those with serious physical disabilities; however SCUBA diving is providing one avenue that many are beginning to pursue.  SCUBA diving is not just for the privileged physically fit, in fact the opposite seems true. Many certified divers with disabilities or adaptive needs, who take the steps toward becoming SCUBA divers, find that the process is not as difficult or prohibiting as they may have previously believed.  Myths associated with SCUBA diving have, for the majority, made this an activity not even considered.  Yet, learning to SCUBA dive is easy! With today's modern diving equipment, training materials and trained instructors using proven instructional methods, diving is accessible to almost anyone.
